Active Release Technique

What is Active Release Technique?

ART

ART® is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

At Holen Family Chiropractic, serving Clinton, MI, and the nearby region, Dr. Karen Holen offers the community a unique treatment approach - the Active Release Technique. This approach has been used since the 1980s. You may wonder how it differs from standard chiropractic care, and the answer lies in its focus on soft tissues.

General Information

The Active Release Technique is a three-step process to reduce your pain and optimize your range of motion.

In step one, our chiropractor will manually feel the area of concern. Specifically, during this process, our practitioner is evaluating your tissue for texture and tension changes that could be causing you pain, weakness, and other similar symptoms. Our practitioner will assess your movement as well.

For step two, we begin administering a treatment protocol. It will consist of manually addressing the problem at the source and encouraging movement with the goal of restoring function and relieving pain in mind. Essentially, this treatment is similar to a deep tissue massage in the fact that our practitioner will apply pressure that targets the deep tissue.

The final step is relief. And there's not much you need to do for this step. This is when you discover how much the Active Release Technique is benefitting you.

You'll also notice no side effects, though it is normal for some patients to feel sore initially when we press on the tender area and apply pressure. Usually, you'll see a change in your condition within five treatments. Some possible improvements you'll see include the following:

  • Less pain
  • Less stiffness
  • Improve range of motion
  • Enhanced circulation to the area
  • Less inflammation
  • Less pain during physical activity

How It Works

The entire concept of the Active Release Technique revolves around identifying areas of tension and swelling that could be leading to issues like tingling, burning, and pain, among other problems.

The purpose of this treatment is to identify and relieve those sources of tension or adhesions. They stem from repetitive use and can affect both function and comfort.

Who Can Benefit
Before our Clinton, MI, practitioner determines if the Active Release Technique is right for you, our chiropractor will need to diagnose your condition. Those who have issues, such as lower back pain, chronic neck pain, strains, plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, bursitis, or tension headaches may benefit. Overall, it's particularly beneficial to those who experience repetitive stress injuries.

At Holen Family Chiropractic, serving Clinton, MI, and the general vicinity, Dr. Holen can help heal or manage various issues with the Active Release Technique, particularly problems from repetitive stress.
